How to schedule an online multiplayer quiz for your event
A quiz is an easy activity to add to an online event. Everyone plays from their own phone or laptop, rounds take minutes, and a scoreboard gives the group something to talk about. This guide shows how to schedule a multiplayer quiz in A Shop for Quiz days ahead, so guests have the invitation well before the event starts.

Why a quiz works as an event activity
Online events often struggle with the same thing: people join, say hello, and then nobody knows what to do next. A short quiz gives everyone a shared task with clear rules and a natural ending. It suits virtual birthdays, team socials, remote onboarding, clubs, community meetups and family calls across time zones.
Each match has one topic and a fixed pace, so you can plan it like any other agenda item. A 10-question round at 20 seconds a question takes about five minutes once everyone is in the room. Two or three rounds with a chat in between fill a comfortable 20 to 30 minute slot.
Schedule the quiz in advance
On the homepage, choose Multiplayer and pick a listed topic or type your own. In settings, choose the difficulty, the number of questions and the time per question, then select Schedule for later instead of Play now.
Enter a room name, your nickname, and the date and time. The time zone defaults to your own; change it if the event is run in another one. Guests see the start time in their own time zone, with the event time zone beside it. You can schedule up to 90 days ahead.
- Guest invitation
- The link you share. It shows the topic, settings, start time and status, and lets guests add the quiz to their calendar.
- Host link
- A private link that returns host controls if you change browser or clear your data. Save it somewhere safe and do not share it.
Share one invitation with everyone
Use Share invitation to send the invitation through your phone’s share menu: a messaging app, a social post, a group chat or email. Use Copy invitation to paste the same message and link into your event page, calendar invite or agenda. Anyone with the link can view the invitation, so share it only with the people you intend to invite.
Guests who answer Yes can choose Add to calendar for Google, Apple or Outlook. A calendar entry is a one-time copy, so if you move the quiz, tell guests to update their own entry. Calendar alerts are set by each guest in their own calendar, so suggest they keep the default one.
Guests can also answer Going? with a quick Yes or No, as in a calendar invitation. You see how many friends are going, as a number only and never names or emails, so you know if the invitation has landed before the lobby opens. It is a signal, not a reservation, and moving the start time asks everyone to answer again.
Open the lobby on the day
From 30 minutes before the start, open your invitation and choose Open lobby. Guests who revisit the invitation are told the lobby is open and can join the room, enter a nickname and chat with everyone before the game begins. A scheduled lobby shows no room code to read out: the link is all anyone needs.
Rooms hold 2 to 20 players, including you. The quiz cannot start before the scheduled time, and it never starts on its own: when the time comes and at least two players are in, press Start game. Wait for late arrivals first, because players cannot join a match already in progress.
If you do not open the lobby, the invitation expires 24 hours after the scheduled start. Once opened, the room lasts 24 hours, which is plenty for several rounds.
Run it as part of your event
Most events pair the quiz with a video or voice call, since the quiz has text chat but no voice. Put the invitation link in the call chat as the quiz begins, so anyone who missed the reminder can join.
After each round, the results screen shows the scores and reopens the chat. Let someone else pick the next topic, then start a rematch from the same room. As host, you can mute or remove a player if needed, and anyone can report an abusive message.
- Icebreaker
- One easy round on a broad topic such as Mixed Trivia or Animals, early in the event.
- Main activity
- Two or three rounds, with each team or guest choosing a topic in turn.
- Closing round
- A custom topic about your team, club or the occasion, for a shared finish.
If plans change
Before you open the lobby, you can edit the time, topic or settings, or cancel the quiz from your invitation. Guests do not get a message when you change it, so tell them in the chat or group where you shared the link. After the lobby opens, you can still cancel before the first match starts.
Plan your quiz now
Choose a topic in multiplayer, then pick Schedule for later in settings. You get an invitation to share straight away.
